Your Guide to Parks, Attractions & Weekend Adventures in Columbia, MO

Hello everyone! I’m Sophia Baker, here to shine a light on some of my favorite things to do around Columbia, Missouri. Whether you’re craving fresh air, local flavor, or cultural discovery, there’s something here for you.

Top Parks & Outdoor Spaces

Stephens Lake Park is a true community gem. With an 11-acre lake, walking trails under mature trees, and open space for picnics or gathering with friends, it’s perfect for both relaxation and light adventure. It’s also home to local music and festivals under the stars.

Albert-Oakland Park spans 79 acres and includes Columbia’s largest municipal pool, disc golf, plenty of lighted courts (pickleball, tennis, basketball), playgrounds, and picnic shelters. If you’re looking for a spot that can fill a full afternoon of activity, this is it.

Rock Bridge Memorial State Park offers a chance to explore Missouri’s natural beauty just minutes from the city. Expect rugged hiking, serene wild areas, caves and a fascinating natural rock bridge. Great for nature lovers and hikers.

Museums, Gardens & Hidden Corners

The Mizzou Botanic Garden wraps its beauty around the University of Missouri’s campus—gardens, trees, statues and paths curated with calm in mind, free to explore year-round.

At the Museum of Art & Archaeology, you’ll find archaeological treasures and art spanning cultures and eras—everything from prehistoric artifacts to modern works. A cultural oasis that won’t cost you a cent.

If you enjoy peaceful strolls and seasonal blooms, Shelter Gardens is a beautiful stop—not far from downtown, offering lovely landscaping and quiet corners for reflection or photos.

Family-Friendly Fun & Local Flavor

For family fun, Midway Golf & Games is a carnival of miniature golf, go-karts, driving ranges, and more. Indoors, Level Up Entertainment packs arcades, laser tag, bowling—great for those last-minute weekend plans or rainy days.

Don’t miss Columbia’s small-town charm at its heart: the Columbia Farmers Market (especially on Saturday mornings)—local produce, crafts, live music, and the chance to catch up with neighbors. Also, the Boone County History & Culture Center offers unexpected stories from our local past.

Weekend Itinerary Ideas

Morning: Start with coffee and a stroll through the botanic garden, then head to Shelter Gardens or Flat Branch Park downtown for fresh air. Explore a museum or two—art or history depending on your mood.

Afternoon: Pack a picnic at Albert-Oakland or Stephens Lake. Fun family options like Midway or Level Up can counterbalance more tranquil spots. If you’re adventurous, hike into Rock Bridge State Park.

Evening: Dine in The District or —if you like live music—check out The Blue Note or a performance from the University Concert Series. End the night watching the sunset over Cooper’s Landing or downtown rooftops if you prefer city lights.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Columbia

  • Many parks are free or low cost—call ahead or check websites for hours and seasonal changes.
  • Wear layers and bring water—weather can shift quickly in mid-Missouri.
  • If attending festivals or shows, purchase tickets early where possible; places fill up.
  • Parking downtown and near campus can be tight especially during events—consider walking, biking, or using rideshares when available.

Columbia has a balance of natural beauty, creative energy, and community warmth. Whether you’re here just a weekend or laying down roots, exploring the parks, trails, arts and flavors of CoMo will always offer something new. I can’t wait to see what you discover.
